After Champaign, we stopped for the night in Bowling Green. It's home to Western Kentucky University, and Amy wanted to stop there because she'd been there before, and they had cool school colors, and a WKU sweatshirt would be a fine addition to her collection of college sweatshirts.
We started the day off at a Shoney's, where they had this big breakfast buffet, filled with all sorts of warmed over breakfast foods. It wasn't very good, but lots of locals were eating it up. We had our first brush with grits, as we studiously avoided the big pan of them, sitting under the heat lamp. Ick.
After we forced it down, we made our way to the local mall, trying to find a place that would have sweatshirts and that would be open on Sunday afternoon. When we got to the mall at 11:45, we were shocked to find that it didn't open until 12:30pm. Clearly, this wasn't Woodfield.
We killed time by playing a game of Lazer Runner at the video game arcade. It's one of those games where you strap on a reflective vest, run around a maze with a laser pistol, and try to shoot everyone in sight.
Amy:As a rule, I try to avoid games that involve chugging around wearing armor and weilding weapons, but I thought, hey...we're in 'Tucky, we don't know anyone...why not? After about two minutes of our ten minute game, I began to wish I hadn't had that second helping of french toast sticks at Shoney's. Andy and I lurched around in the dark, orange juice sloshing through our stomachs to the beat of the Village People. A five-year-old chased me. I was in hell.
After we picked up a WKU sweatshirt at the Kentucky Korner store at the mall, we made our way to the mighty Flealand. We'd seen signs for it on the way into town, and decided that it must be some big flea market place. It was beyond our wildest dreams.
Five connected buildings of people selling crap! Smoky and dirty! It was a dream come true! After about three of the buildings,
though, we'd had enough. There was a unique sort of stink in the air that wasn't too yummy, so we made our way out of there
and started to head to
Nashville and Murfreesboro
